Research on social cohesion in Western Europe has mainly examined relations between ethnic majorities and immigrant-origin minorities. The INTER-MIN project broadens this focus by systematically studying relations between ethnic minority groups in Western Europe. It aims to map inter-minority relations and identify the mechanisms shaping them through advanced quantitative analyses. A key task is collecting large-scale data among diverse ethnic minorities in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, giving the candidate an active role in shaping the research. Your job We are looking for an ambitious researcher to fill a two-year postdoc position (end date contract 31-8-2028). You will work on research for 70% of your time, and have the possibility to top up your contract with teaching for up to 17%. You will contribute to the teaching programme of Interdisciplinary Social Science. You will be part of a larger project team that consists of Borja Martinović (principal investigator), three PhD students, and several colleagues who are part of the supervisory teams of the PhD students. The team also includes external collaborators in the UK and Germany. You will work in a diverse and supportive environment at the European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations (ERCOMER) at the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science. ERCOMER is one of the leading institutes in Europe regarding questions of diversity. It is also part of the Dutch research school Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS), in which the postdoc will be embedded. There will also be opportunities for international collaboration. The core tasks will include:
  • Carrying out research within the scope of the project;
  • Designing surveys and coordinating data collection in three countries (Netherlands, Germany, UK);
  • Collaborating with other team members to work jointly on survey design and academic publications;
  • Translating and communicating research findings and scientific insights to different types of audiences, including scientific, professional and community audiences.

We are searching for an enthusiastic colleague who recognizes themself in the abovementioned values and who meets the requirements below:
  • A PhD in quantitative sociology, social/political psychology, survey methodology, or related fields;
  • Theoretical expertise in intergroup relations (contacts/attitudes), group identities, perceived discrimination or related concepts;
  • Experience with survey design and management of large data collections is required, as is experience with advanced quantitative methods - including analyses of nested data;
  • A track record appropriate for the stage of the career;
  • A team player;
  • Independent thinking, proactive attitude, and hands-on mentality;
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills;
  • A professional attitude and conduct that includes organizational sensitivity, integrity, pragmatism, and good communication skills;
  • Proficiency in English (C2) and German (C1 level). Working level of Dutch is preferrable, but not required;
  • Experience in teaching academic courses, or interest in gaining this experience.

  • a temporary position for two years;
  • a working week of 24 - 32 hours and a gross monthly salary between € 3.546 and €5.538 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 10 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU);
