Job description

Consultant Intensivist | 12-Bed Level 5 ICU | CICM Accredited | Regional NSW
The Opportunity
We are working closely with a Level 5 general adult Intensive Care Unit in regional New South Wales and are keen to connect with FCICM-qualified Intensivists interested in a full-time role within a structured, consultant-led service.
This is a hands-on regional ICU offering broad exposure across medical and surgical critical care, within a well-supported and clearly defined clinical model.
The ICU
The unit is a 12-bed service (8 ICU, 4 HDU) providing Level 5 general adult medical–surgical critical care.
Capabilities include:
  • Invasive and non-invasive ventilation
  • Vasopressor and inotrope support
  • Renal replacement therapy
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Peri-operative and emergency critical care

Children are admitted occasionally on a case-by-case basis and are managed jointly with Paediatrics.
The unit does not provide ECMO.
The ICU is:
  • CICM accredited for 6 months of General Training
  • Consultant-led with 2 Intensivists rostered Monday–Friday
  • 1 Intensivist rostered on weekends
  • Supported by a Registrar and SRMO 24/7

This structure provides stability, appropriate workload distribution and strong clinical governance.
The Hospital
The hospital functions as a major regional referral centre within the Hunter New England network, delivering comprehensive emergency, medical and surgical services across a broad catchment.
The ICU works closely with Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics and surgical services, with established transfer pathways to tertiary centres when required.
Why Consider This Role
  • 12-bed Level 5 ICU
  • Mixed medical–surgical case mix
  • RRT and plasmapheresis capability
  • CICM 6-month General Training accreditation
  • Stable consultant staffing model
  • Strong tertiary referral pathways
  • Substantially comparable pathway supported

For interstate or international applicants, the CICM specialist assessment and AHPRA registration pathway can be clearly structured and supported.
The Location
Based in a well-established regional centre in northern New South Wales, the area offers short commute times, strong schooling and affordable living. The region provides a balanced lifestyle with access to national parks and metropolitan connectivity.
Requirements
  • Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) or equivalent
  • Specialist Registration with AHPRA (or eligibility)
  • International Medical Graduates assessed by CICM as partially or substantially comparable
