The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team within Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for HDU Edenhall, this role will give opportunity to rotate to Rehabilitation Ward Philipshill and development exposure to Neuro Critical Care. As an essential part of our national spinal injuries team, you’ll deliver high quality, clinically effective patient care at all times.

We can offer you a varied caseload encompassing care of the spinal injuries patient in the rehabilitation phase that will help you develop your capabilities and experience, and you’ll enjoy the real respect, rapport and effective working of a close-knit, highly skilled, multidisciplinary team. This rotational role will give opportunity to care for those during the acute stage of their spinal injury in our High

Dependency Ward, and following the patient journey to the rehabilitation ward preparing them for home.

We are seeking to recruit, enthusiastic and highly motivated band 5 registered nurses to join the existing National Spinal Injuries team, all staff will be supported by our dedicated Educator for Spinal Injuries and will undergo in-house training and competencies which will enable you to be become competent to perform extended roles pertinent to spinal management such as, supra-pubic catheterisation, male catheterisation, tracheostomy care, specialist bowel management, respiratory care for ventilated patients. The National Spinal Injuries Unit consists of Edenhall Ward which is a 12 bedded Spinal High Dependency & Philipshill ward which is a 32 bedded Spinal injuries rehabilitation ward with an integrated High Acuity respiratory care unit.

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries is one of 3 areas that have been part of the pilot for Digital Clinical Notes. This is an exciting opportunity for you to be part of an exciting innovative time within NHSGGC.12 hour shifts will be offered with flexibility of 7.5hrs over a 24/7 service Opportunity to rotate throughout Spinal Injuries and other acute areas and other specialities to expand and develop skills. You must be able to demonstrate a commitment to patient-centred care, continuing professional development, an understanding of our service, and the specific needs of our patients with a commitment to learn and develop these skills

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Base location is Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday Sunday, 12 hour shifts day shift and night shift rotational throughout Spinal Unit

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives/carers and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.
  • Work within the defined policies, procedures, standards and protocols of the Ward/Department and report outcomes to senior nursing staff to enable monitoring of standards of care.
  • Supervise/mentor less experienced staff/students who are providing care to patients and act as a source of advice to ensure their educational needs are met.
  • Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of patients/clients are met.
  • Responsible for maintaining patient records within agreed standards.
  • Maintain departmental stock levels, through ordering of stores, ensuring the economic use of all resources.
  • Develop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge following guidelines for revalidation.
  • Adheres to the organisational infection control policies and procedures and acts as a role model in the maintenance of a safe environment

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Registered Nurse on the NMC register (part 1, 7 &12)
  • Ability to fulfil criteria outlined in the job description
