Band 4 Dietitians Assistant Practitioner, 37.5 hours, 12months fixed term or secondment

This post is integral to the dietitians team who are based at St Richard's Hospital Chichester. You will support the registered dietitians working across teams such as acute in-patients, paediatrics, diabetes, bariatrics in providing a quality dietetic service to patients living in their own home.

You will assist dietitians in the review of these patients, face to face and via telephone and deliver on elements of delegated dietetic care within an agreed scope of practice under the supervision of a dietitian.

You will have excellent communication skills and have experience of dealing with adults or children with nutrition related issues in a caring capacity (in a healthcare environment).

You will be able to maintain accurate health records, obtaining information from a range of sources to support decisions on dietetic treatment plans and be committed to patient centred, non-discriminatory practice.

St Richard’s Hospital, is a 450-bed district general hospital situated in Chichester. It is part of University Hospitals Sussex Trust.

To support the registered dietitians in providing a quality dietetic service in a variety of settings which may include inpatients, outpatients and group teaching sessions.

To assist dietitians in the review of patients, face to face and via telephone.

To deliver on elements of delegated dietetic care within agreed scope of practice under the supervision of a dietitian.

To provide non-clinical support to the dietitians, e.g. maintaining department resources, inputting of data, general admin duties.

Cover workload of other dietetic support workers, e.g. during leave.

Support the dietitians in normal activities undertaken by department – MDT working, projects, meetings, service developments, audits & research, developing resources, training other health professionals.

Candidate Pack

Main duties by factor:
Communications and Relationship skills - (Factor 1)

Effectively work as a member of the dietitians and multidisciplinary team by ensuring good communications are maintained (verbal and written).

Speak face to face and on the telephone to patients and health professionals.

Present to patient groups.

Clearly and accurately document all patient interventions following department and Trust standards. This is to be undertaken in a timely fashion.

Effectively liaise with staff from other departments and teams when needed to ensure best care is delivered to dietetic patients at all times, e.g. catering, facilities, nursing/Health Care Assistants.

Support dietitians in encouraging patients to follow dietetic treatment plans; reporting any issues back to the dietitians.

Attend and participate in meetings relevant to job role, e.g. dietetic service and project group meetings, MDT meetings and case planning meetings.

Analytical and Judgemental skills - (Factor 3)

Undertake basic nutritional screening of patients and commencement of appropriate action plan for individual patients.

Analyse recipes and diet diaries using the dietary analysis computer package and literature provided by manufacturers of food and nutrition related products.

Collect data required for monitoring services, clinical audits, and patient surveys. This includes accurate inputting onto spreadsheets and assisting in the presentation of results and production of reports.

Within scope of practice, gather and use information to assess problems and offer solutions, e.g. guiding patients in following dietitian’s treatment plan.
