Job description

Salary Grade H Senior Lecturer: £46,049 - £58,225 pro rata Contractual hours 0.5 Basis Part time Region Temporary - Part time Job Type Academic Job reference R09264
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Pilot Studies to join the School of Engineering at UWE Bristol on a 12-month fixed-term contract at 0.5 FTE, with the possibility of extension or change of contract subject to organisational needs.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and development of the Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies programme, with a particular focus on leading the Level 6 module Pilot and Airline Operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in preparing final-year students for careers in the aviation industry by delivering high-quality, practice-informed teaching on airline operations, regulatory frameworks, and professional pilot practice.
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong aviation industry experience, ideally as a commercial pilot, flight instructor, or in airline/aviation operations. Expertise in areas such as air law and regulation (e.g. CAA/EASA/ICAO frameworks), air operator certification (AOC), flight crew licensing, safety management systems, and pilot training pathways will be highly valued.
You will design and deliver engaging, industry-relevant teaching, incorporating real-world case studies, scenario-based learning, and where appropriate, simulation and external guest input. You will also contribute to curriculum enhancement and help ensure that teaching remains aligned with current aviation practice and evolving industry standards.
As a Senior Lecturer, you will take a leadership role in module delivery, contribute to programme development, and support colleagues where appropriate. There will also be opportunities to engage in scholarly and/or practice-based activity and to develop links with industry partners to enhance student learning and employability.
Join us to inspire future pilots and aerospace engineers, and to help shape the next generation of aviation professionals.
About you

We are looking for candidates with a strong combination of academic knowledge and professional aviation experience. You should be confident in delivering teaching that bridges theory and real-world aviation practice and be passionate about supporting students in their transition to professional careers.
You will typically hold a postgraduate qualification in Aerospace Engineering, Aviation, or a related discipline, or have equivalent professional experience within the aviation sector. A background as a commercial pilot (e.g. ATPL or CPL holder), flight instructor, or experience within airline operations or a regulated aviation environment is highly desirable.
You should demonstrate in-depth knowledge of airline operations and regulatory frameworks, including familiarity with UK CAA, EASA, or ICAO requirements. Experience of delivering training, such as flight instruction, simulator training, or classroom-based teaching is essential, and experience of teaching in higher education is advantageous.
As a Senior Lecturer, you will bring experience of leading modules or structured training programmes, and the ability to mentor colleagues and contribute to curriculum development. You will also demonstrate a commitment to maintaining professional currency and engaging with industry developments.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates who can bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our team. As a School of Engineering, we are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive and collaborative working environment, and we encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including women, non-binary individuals, and those from Global Majority backgrounds.
