Job description

The advertised post of Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow (SCTF) is tenable for a fixed term of 12 months commencing August 2026. Please note that this vacancy is only open to applicants with a minimum of 24 months NHS experience at time of start date.

The post is for a trainee who has successfully completed the MRCS examination and aims to pursue a career in Trauma & Orthopaedics. It offers an opportunity to develop an interest in teaching whilst broadening clinical and research experience. Successful candidates will play an integral role in the delivery of the undergraduate clinical teaching programme for medical students from the University of Newcastle. The department provides teaching from early clinical experience visits to ward-based assistantships. Teaching is provided across a variety of settings, and the successful candidate will spend approximately five sessions per week delivering this. The candidate will also coordinate the Department’s weekly teaching programme. The remaining 5 sessions will consist of clinical duties, research and professional development. The on-call commitment is second on call in a 1:9 rota. The main clinical duties will be across emergency and elective orthopaedic care. Opportunities for clinical research are available and can be tailored to individual requirements.

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.

Our values should be the ‘golden thread’ which runs through everything we do – they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement.

We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women’s Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.

The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our ‘Balance’ programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.

You will be supervised by Mr Jagannath Chakravarthy, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who has a commitment to undergraduate training. The post is advertised for a doctor who would function at Registrar level (Senior Teaching Fellow) . Ideally the successful applicant will have completed Foundation Training (or equivalent) and Core training (with Trauma & Orthopaedics). Applicants should have passed the MRCS.

This post includes the opportunity for the successful applicant to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education during their employment within the Trust. Any formal qualification will be undertaken during the year of employment within the Trust and is subject to a financial cap (international applicants may not be eligible for this funding and if wishing to pursue a qualification, eligibility should be confirmed prior to application)
