Full Professor (W3)
in Welding and Joining
at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of
welding and joining, to be filled by July 1, 2027. The Welding and Joining
Institute at RWTH Aachen University researches and teaches in the field
of material joining processes such as welding, bonding and soldering.
The topics range from basic research to industrial application, from the
influence on the materials and the interaction with the design to integra-
tion into the modern production environment through automation tech-
nology, intelligent quality monitoring and modeling and simulation.

We are looking for a committed person with an interdisciplinary approach
in line with our main areas of focus, who can take on the challenges of
research, teaching and intensive industrial cooperation. Your task will be
to continue the very successful scientific activities of the Institute, com-
bined with a very high level of third-party funding acquisition activity. On
the other hand, you will be expected to further develop the existing areas
of work in a future-proof manner, which explicitly also leaves room for the
continuation of your own research interests to date and for new scientific
focuses.

You have outstanding scientific qualifications and experience in the areas
mentioned. In line with the interdisciplinary nature of material joining tech-
nology, you not only have experience in the development and application
of the relevant processes, but also feel at home in related areas such as
materials science. The ISF is one of the larger institutes at RWTH, so you
should already have taken on personnel responsibility and acquired man-
agement skills. Ideally, you are a welding engineer or have comparable
experience in theory and practice. You will have the opportunity to ad-
vance your research activities at one of the most renowned German uni-
versities and provide new impetus. You can actively and innovatively
shape a broad range of courses in German and English for students from
different disciplines. In addition, there are many opportunities for interdis-
ciplinary collaboration within and outside the faculty, in international re-
search collaborations and with industry.

The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research ex-
perience, such as a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or
equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or
in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication
are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent Ger-
man is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will
be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.

Application documents should be submitted in English.
