Job description
Ref Number B02-10580 Professional Expertise Clinical Department School of Life & Medical Sciences (B02) 02-Jun-2026 About us We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL have jointly invested £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute supporting the vision to expand research in protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease. About the role You will work under the supervision of Dr Gargi Banerjee (grant holder) within a research programme titled “The expanded prion paradigm and amyloid-beta diseases”. This research explores recent clinical observations which show that the amyloid-beta protein, which causes Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) can behave as a prion, and cause newly identified iatrogenic diseases in people exposed to cadaveric tissues earlier in life. The MRC Prion Unit at UCL has led research in this area, with high profile publications in journals including Nature and Nature Medicine. You will primarily support a new longitudinal cohort study, which will review whether people previously treated with cadaveric human growth hormone have early signs of Alzheimer’s disease or CAA. You will contribute to clinical data collection and analysis for this study, and to the study’s patient and public engagement/involvement (PPI) activities, which includes the creation of a peer-support group for this cohort. An Honorary Clinical contract will be sought from UCLH, and any other Trusts where the postholder may provide input, for which a DBS check will be required. The post is available and is funded by the Medical Research Council for one year. There may be a possibility of a one-year extension, but this cannot be guaranteed at this stage. If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact HR (p.petmeza@ucl.ac.uk). A full job description and person specification for this role can be accessed below. To apply, please upload a current CV, complete the online application form, and use the supporting statement section or upload a cover letter to outline how you meet the essential and desirable criteria for the role. Please do not upload any additional attachments as these will not be considered by the selection panel. About you You will have a medical degree (MBBS, MB BCh, or equivalent) and be GMC registered with a license to practice (or be eligible for full GMC registration). An interest in pursuing translational clinical research in neurology, the ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary team, and technical writing are also essential for this role. You will be a registered medical practitioner permitted to practise in the UK and have completed general medical training. This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa. What we offer The starting salary will be £57,488 per annum (CL7.4 and StR Level 3) or £57,853 per annum (RDPS Nodal Point 3), inclusive of London Allowance.
