Full Professor (W3)
in Microstructure Analytics
at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences

We are inviting applications for the position of full professor in the area of
microstructure analytics, to be filled as soon as possible.

The fields of activities will encompass developments in new methods and
techniques in electron microscopy, as well as applications in a broad
range of areas from solid state physics to materials science.

Method development may address improvements in imaging and analyti-
cal techniques in a range of electron microscopy instrument classes cou-
pled with advancements of modern software tools like machine learning.
A special emphasis will be placed on the correlative combination of the
experimental capabilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron
probe micro analysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
and the MicroCT- and NanoCT-instrumentation installed in the analytical
laboratory at the Research Centre CARL of RWTH.

The position involves participation in the board of directors of the Ernst
Ruska-Centre (ER-C) competence platform, which is jointly operated by
Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University, as well as ac-
cess to the existing ER-C infrastructure within the framework of the appli-
cable agreements.

The leadership role in the GFE as a central scientific facility of RWTH re-
quires experience in a range of applications of electron microscopy in
solid state physics and materials science. This may include metallic and
ceramic structure materials, materials for future information technology, in
particular quantum information and neuromorphic computing as well as
2D-materials. Further activities may encompass materials for the energy
transition including battery materials, membrane materials and catalysts
for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

The requirements include a doctoral degree and additional research ex-
perience, such as a habilitation (post-doctoral lecturing qualification) or
equivalent achievements gained as a university researcher or professor or
in a research position outside academia. Teaching ability and dedication
are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent Ger-
man is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will
be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.
