Position: Consultant in GI Pathology (CON 968)
The appointee will have specialist experience in GI pathology and may also undertake specialist liver work. The role is a full‑time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit, supporting the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the surrounding region. The department follows the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to ensure full staffing and equitable distribution of work among consultants.Main

duties of the jobThe successful applicant will join the Cellular Pathology Department at St James's University Hospital, providing GI pathology services with potential for specialised liver pathology.

Responsibilities include:
  • Reporting on complex endoscopic polyp resections, multi‑visceral pelvic exenteration surgery, and other regional referral cases.
  • Participating in three multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for advanced colorectal, anal and upper GI cancers, and a gastroenterology clinicopathological correlation meeting.
  • Reporting liver pathology cases (native, transplant, tumour) and collaborating with hepatology colleagues on an urgent biopsy service and routine reporting.
  • Contributing to weekly hepatobiliary cancer MDT discussions.
  • Using genomic testing, IHC and FISH at the West Yorkshire Cellular Pathology Genomic Centre and the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory hub.
  • Engaging with academic links at the University of Leeds, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Completing digital slide scanning and part‑time home working where permitted.

All other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register. Applicants who wish to work full‑time, part‑time or job‑share will be considered.
