Job Summary: The primary function of the role is to provide technical electrical engineering expertise within the Maintenance Department and to provide support to the site maintenance engineers in relation to the integrity and security of the site electrical infrastructure and compliance with legislative requirements with regard to the operational safety and maintenance of the site electrical systems. An additional responsibility for the role is to participate in the delivery of major capital and operating expense projects utilising IPP project procedures. The Senior Electrical Engineer will develop and approve the technical electrical project scopes and manage electrically biased projects. Duties
- Provide technical authority for electrical systems across the smelter.
- Support the safe operation and maintenance of substations, motors, drives, UPS systems, control systems, overhead cranes
- Maintain reliable power supply to potlines, cast house, carbon plant, utilities and auxiliary plant areas.
- Support power system isolations and permitting and reenergisation.
- Troubleshoot power system and control systems issues.
Electrical safety and compliance
- Act as a senior technical resource for electrical safety across the site.
- Ensure electrical work complies with site standards, statutory regulations, arc-flash requirements and industry best practice.
- Participate in incident investigations, risk assessments, audits, HAZOPs and safety reviews.
- Promote a strong electrical safety culture across engineering, operations, maintenance and contractor teams.
Reliability, Maintenance and Asset Improvement:
- Lead reliability improvement projects for critical electrical assets.
- Analyse failures, repeat defects and unplanned outages using RCA and structured problem-solving methods.
- Develop and improve preventive, predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies.
- Create long-term asset management plans for critical electrical infrastructure.
- Identify obsolescence risks and develop practical upgrade or replacement plans.
- Manage electrically biased engineering development and upgrade projects from concept and design through to installation, testing, commissioning and closeout.
- Ensure engineering changes are implemented with stakeholder agreement and comply with relevant engineering standards and legislative requirements.
Operational support and breakdown response
- Provide senior electrical engineering support during plant breakdowns and outages
- Coordinate technical response using internal teams, OEMs, contractors and specialist service providers.
- Provide clear technical advice to production and maintenance teams during high-pressure operational events.
- Participate in out-of-hours support or escalation arrangements where required.
Automation, controls and digital systems interface
- Work closely with automation and control systems teams on PLC, HMI, SCADA, protection relay and power monitoring interfaces.
- Ensure electrical systems are properly integrated with plant control, alarm, interlock and functional safety requirements.
Technical leadership
- Provide technical guidance to electrical engineers, maintenance supervisors, electricians, technicians and contractors.
- Mentor junior engineers and support the development of electrical competence across the site.
- Maintain electrical documentation, including single-line diagrams, protection settings, asset registers, maintenance standards and engineering records.
- Lead technical reviews and communicate complex electrical issues clearly to operational and senior leadership teams.
What we are looking for: Essential
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Significant experience in heavy industry, preferably mining, metals, power generation, utilities, oil and gas, chemicals or large-scale manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems.
- Experience with transformers, switchgear, protection relays, motors, VSDs, substations and industrial power systems.
- Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, protection drawings and electrical layouts.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety, isolation, switching and permit-to-work systems.
- Experience delivering or supporting electrical capital projects and commissioning activities.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence operations, maintenance, contractors and leadership.
Desirable
- Experience with electrical reliability, maintenance strategy, fault investigation and root cause analysis.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, CMMS and similar systems.
- Knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, power monitoring systems.
- Experience managing contractors, OEMs and specialist electrical service providers
