Job description

Chef duties and responsibilitiesDepending on the seniority of their role, chefs perform a broad range of day-to-day duties. These include:
  • preparing for service, which includes ensuring the kitchen is well stocked with the necessary ingredients, as well as cleaning, cutting and marinating food
  • cooking and serving food, while coordinating with other kitchen staff and wait staff
  • maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the kitchen
  • creating new dishes and planning menus
  • ensuring that dishes meet high standards at all stages of preparation and presentation
  • hiring and training junior chefs.

Chef skills and qualificationsTo excel in the role, a chef needs a range of prerequisite skills and qualifications, including:
  • ability to work as part of a team and coordinate tasks with others
  • strong communication skills
  • attention to detail
  • good organisational and planning skills
  • ability to work efficiently while under time pressure
  • creativity and an imaginative approach to food presentation.
