Job description

Job Overview

We are seeking a ST-Higher LAS (Senior Clinical Fellow level) to join our well-established and supportive Geriatric Medicine team within the Acute Frailty Unit at Withybush General Hospital. This is a 6-month fixed-term post from 05/08/2026 to 02/02/2027, created following a vacancy in the Specialty Training (ST) programme.

This role closely mirrors higher specialty training, offering structured development and experience to support progression into ST training or portfolio pathway routes. It is well suited to doctors looking to further develop their experience in geriatric and frailty medicine.

You will work as a key member of a multidisciplinary team delivering care across the Acute Frailty Unit, with opportunities to contribute to frailty in-reach in the Emergency Department and, where desired, gain experience in community and intermediate care settings.

Hywel Dda University Health Board offers the opportunity to develop your career in a supportive and forward-thinking environment while enjoying a high quality of life in West Wales. Withybush General Hospital is located in Pembrokeshire, an area known for its stunning coastline, outdoor lifestyle, and welcoming communities.

You will benefit from a strong team ethos, a focus on staff wellbeing, and access to training and development opportunities. A personalised development plan will be supported by an experienced HEIW ST supervisor, with opportunities to gain additional experience aligned to your career goals, including preparation for higher specialty training or the portfolio pathway.

Main duties of the job

  • Work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team within the Acute Frailty Unit
  • Deliver assessment and management of frail older adults across the acute frailty pathway
  • Provide frailty in-reach support to the Emergency Department
  • Participate in outpatient clinics and rotate through geriatric medicine subspecialties
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
  • Engage in teaching and professional development opportunities
  • Work with a named supervisor to develop and progress a personalised development plan
  • Undertake additional training opportunities (e.g. community care or critical care) to support career progression where required
