Hospital Care Assistant New Zealand | Public & Private Hospitals (Te Whatu Ora & Private Facilities) Support Patient Care Across Hospital Wards Hospital Care Assistants (HCAs) in New Zealand play a vital role in supporting nurses and clinical teams with day-to-day patient care. Working across medical, surgical, emergency, maternity, rehabilitation, and aged care wards, this role focuses on patient comfort, safety, and wellbeing. What You'll Do? Assist patients with washing, dressing, eating, and toileting. Support nurses with routine patient care and ward duties. Monitor and report changes in patient condition to clinical staff. Assist with safe patient movement, transfers, and mobility support. Provide basic comfort care such as bedding, positioning, and hygiene. Prepare and clean patient rooms and hospital equipment. Restock supplies and support ward organisation. Follow infection control and hygiene protocols. Assist with non-clinical patient observations. Provide emotional support and companionship to patients. Where You’ll Work: Medical wards Surgical wards Emergency departments Rehabilitation units Maternity wards Aged care units What We're Looking For: No formal qualification required for entry-level roles. NZQA Health & Wellbeing Certificate Level 3–4 (advantageous). Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to follow instructions from registered nurses. Compassionate, patient, and emotionally resilient attitude. Physically fit for lifting and mobility assistance tasks. Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends.
